OnLive: The Future Of Gaming… Over The Internet To Your TV

March 27th, 2009
YouTube Preview Image

OnLive delivers the hottest games from top publishers for instant, high-performance play on TV, PC or Mac over broadband…

Claimed to be in “stealth development” for years, OnLive works by using a server farm to do all work of your current console and then send it over broadband to your house. I’m pretty sure that means that even my single player games will lag now…

When it was first announced, my initial reaction was “Wow, that’s amazing” followed immediately by “But I don’t want to give up that much control over my games.”. And I don’t. I don’t want to rely on so many X factors to access and enjoy my games. I don’t want to rely on the OnLive service functioning, as well as the internet service to deliver it. What if I wanted to travel somewhere that doesn’t have internet? I could take my console. With OnLive I’d be completely cut off.

I don’t want to not “own” the game I’m paying for. I know more and more things are going digital these days, but there’s still a lot of comfort in owning a physical copy of something you paid for. You know it’s there when you need it. I imagine it’s the same reason people purchase the Ctrl+Alt+Del collection books even though all of the comics are available for free online. Sometimes you want tangible stuff that you know can’t disappear with an internet outage or a corrupt hard drive. [Tim at Ctrl+Alt+Del]

As for me and my house, we are keeping our beloved Xbox 360 and Wii for now, but in the future, who knows!

OnLive is currently recruiting for their Beta test. Interested in helping? Me too! More to come.

Lost Planet 2 Details: Customizable Characters, Team Health

March 26th, 2009

Lost Planet 2

New details for Capcom’s Lost Planet 2 have surfaced revealing the story’s change of focus and a combined team power bar. According to a first-look article in the latest OXM, the game no longer includes a core character instead players create and fully customize their own solider for the ice cold war zone. Teams are comprised of four characters — with four player co-op — that each sport their own health bar (aka thermal energy reserves) but teams also share a combined power meter. The “Team Military Power Bar” reacts to team actions, depleting when a downed member of your squad respawns for example.

If you played the first Lost Planet (I’m sure you’ll remember… (I threw my controller quite a few times trying to beat expert mode), then Lost Planet 2 is shaping up to be everything you loved from the first one, plus a whole lot more. Lost Planet 2 going to be more team based with many different strategies and new various weapons, new melee moves (described as, “a little like the chainsaw in Gears of War”) and VS units (Lost Planet’s mech-like suits) at their disposal… not to mention more bitingly cold landscapes. Capcom just has a way of taking a proven game genre like the third person shooter, and giving it an arcade feel and I love it.

Lost Planet 2 is currently planned for the Xbox 360 but my PS3 is still holding out… but I think it’ll be a cold day (hehe) before it sees any Lost Planet action…

Rumor: Army of Two sequel called ‘The 40th Day’

March 8th, 2009

armyoftwosequel_580
An anonymous tipster hooked us up with some alleged details regarding the rumored Army of Two sequel. Our source is confident that the sequel will be titled Army of Two: The 40th Day, but we won’t know for sure until March 12. Still, there’s plenty of solid evidence piling up. We’ve built our case after the break.

So, here are the highlights of the supposed game info:

* The game takes place in Shanghai, where a network of PMCs are looking to take over, under the rule of a leader with a hidden purpose
* Rios and Salem are back, however they’ve been reluctantly dragged into the conflict and don’t have the full story
* The game will feature moral decisions, a deeper weapons customization system, multiple endings, and even a few followers
* Multiplayer will be outsourced yet again
* On the technical side: The 40th Day adds Beast lighting and Fracture, as well as an improved networking system
* Environmental interaction: some weapons will be capable of tearing through thin walls and obstacles in the game; and new AI scripts will improve your partner’s realism (e.g., peeking through windows, taking out enemies silently, etc.)
* EA will be tossing civilians into the mix, which you can use as meat human shields

Our tipster also provides us with alleged details of the game’s first levels:

* 1st map is the introduction (duh)
* 2nd map is the invasion; with Rios and Salem escaping from a crumbling building
* 3rd map takes place in a zoo
* 4th map takes Rios and Salem to a hospital

Still unconfirmed: How EA plans to execute fist-bumping 2.0. [via Joystick]

Lost Planet 2 4-Player Online Co-Op – WOOT!

February 25th, 2009

Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Viddler video.

Capcom has officially confirmed one of the more exciting features found in Lost Planet 2’s announcement trailer: “The intense and action packed campaign mode comes with the ability to form teams of up to 4 players online to clear mission objectives with friends.” Based on the initial gameplay footage, said mission objectives generally involve coordinated mech maneuvers and wanton destruction of the titular planet’s more unfriendly creatures.

The press release also provides a general outline of the story, which takes place 10 years after the amnesia-riddled and ironically forgettable exploits of Lost Planet’s Wayne Holden. Players will now take control of several customizable snow pirates “as plot threads evolve from various perspectives.”

Capcom promises to deliver more information on Lost Planet 2 over the coming months. At this time, the game has only been confirmed to be in development for the Xbox 360.

I hope they include a “really, really easy mode” because holy crap, was it not the hardest game ever? Still though, I am so excited! [via Joystick]

Netflix To Offer Streaming-Only Service Plans

February 21st, 2009

netflixDebates are raging as to what the future of movie distribution will look like. There are those who claim that physical discs like DVDs, Blu-ray, and whatever format will eventually supplant Blu-ray will always deliver a superior viewing experience versus anything that will be available via streaming. Pundits on the other side of the debate, say that as broadband’s footprint continues to expand and quality is improving.

Interestingly, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is siding firmly with the latter camp and it would even appear that Netflix is gearing up to move all of its eggs from the mail-distribution basket to the online streaming basket. Hastings indicated that perhaps as soon as later this year or sometime in 2010, Netflix might start offering online-streaming-only subscription plans beyond just its current Starz plan.

I am super excited that they are even considering this move, because 90% of my Netflix experience is via my Xbox 360. Streaming is one of the best things Netflix ever did, keeping me occupied while I have to wait for the snail mail to come! [via Slashdot]

Capcom “leaked” Dead Rising 2 for PC, 360 and PS3 – GOOOOO ZOMBIES!

February 10th, 2009

Awww Craps (okay so it is Roulette, but still a casino joke...)Capcom has officially announced the title not just for Xbox 360, but for PS3 and PC as well! I’m sure all those “leaked” videos from last week were from fans and not to get of of us all buzzing with excitement… ;)

Dead Rising 2 is set several years after the zombie invasion of Willamette, Colorado. Unfortunately, Capcom tells us, that zombie virus was not contained at the end of the first game and spread unchecked throughout the U.S. Dead Rising 2 depicts a country where zombie outbreaks continue to strike.

As rumored, the game is being developed by Canada’s Blue Castle Games. According to the press release, “A number of members from the original Dead Rising team will be working alongside Blue Castle Games throughout the development process.” [via Joystick]

P.S. I counted up all the zombie related posts lately… and I think I have a problem…

Zombies Gone Wild In New Resident Evil 5 Screenshots

February 6th, 2009

Zombinos Gone Wild

There are few things I like better than good scotch, a well timed plasma grenade, chainsawing someone looking the other way, and a swarm of zombies… as long as I have a shotgun… and it isn’t midnight. Capcom has released new RE5 screenshots and… well they kept me up all night. Silly Capcom — I’d already had my chamomile tea too!

The screens show of some beautiful water effects, along with a zombie with a huge knife and a zombie alligator/crocodile (I can’t differentiate as I know nothing of zombie reptile anatomy) that is totally badass. I’m sure they had a perfectly legit reason for going into the water in the first place seeing it looks so black and tepid… Oh, and lest we forget plastic-shopping-bag-wrapped-with-electrical-tape-head…-man for lack of a better description — He looks menacing too, well really just the chainsaw, cuz the bag is kinda funny. Despite all of the silliness, the game looks seriously slick. I can’t wait! [via Joystick]

More screens after the jump.
