iPhone 3.0 is live! so I am going to post 9to5mac.com’s tethering tutorial for you guys, or you can go and support them on their site.

You now don’t have to do any downgrading or torrenting. Seems you can just run a little command in terminal (Make sure you are on OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone and iTunes 8.2):

On a Mac:

Open terminal and paste in:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Hit enter, it’ll look like nothing happened… but it put iTunes into a testing mode that lets the rest work.

After that, the steps become a lot more simple.

1. Download this file (for AT&T) and mount the disk image (thanks Gizmodo) for other carriers, try here.

2. Option-click on “restore” in your iTunes with your iPhone attached. Browse to the opened disk image file and hit OK. It will update phone settings for a few seconds.

3. You have tethering. Now go into your iPhone/settings/general/network/Internet Tethering and turn it on.

Or if your on a PC:

C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

For people who are unaware of what tethering is, it’s using the iPhone’s EDGE or 3G connection and using it on a computer which the phone is either attached over USB or Bluetooth, sharing the connection so that if you have no WiFi and you don’t have a 3G card you could just plug in your iPhone and browse away.

Peter S Kolmisoppi, one of the co-founders of Pirate Bay, tweeted sadly that, “According to leaked information from the court we lost (got the news last night). Trustworthy source as well.” The site’s 4 owners each face a year in prison and over a $3.5 million fine if the judgment comes through.

For those of you that don’t know, The Pirate Bay is a Swedish website that indexes, stores and tracks BitTorrent (.torrent) files, such a music and movies. They are charged with being accessories to copyright infringement, but Kolmisoppi says that, “nothing will happen to TPB, us personally or file sharing what so ever”, although the outcome is still uncertain in my opinion.

I’m sure that the defendants will appeal the verdict and finally buy that island they were looking for, thus starting their own country… kinda like Waterworld, but with better acting.

The guys over at AppleInsider have discovered that the boot script in the beta 3.0 version of the iPhone firmware alludes to the Broadcom BCM4329 wireless chip.

This new Broadcom chip, among other things, supports 8011.N wireless (including 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz) and the real shocker, FM receiving and transmitting, which 9to5Mac found out from the Broadcom spec sheet. 9to5Mac says, “[this chip] theoretically could be used to broadcast sound into car stereos..without external adapters.”

MobileDevDesign points out:

The BCM4329’s FM transmit capabilities enable consumers to stream music directly from their mobile devices to car stereos or home theater systems without special adapters or bulky cables. With the FM receiver, users can get real-time traffic information as well as music, news, and sports broadcasts on their mobile devices.

While FM radio frequency isn’t the newest technology, it does open up some interesting doors. For instance, the Nike+ in-shoe pedometer might finally work for the iPhone and I can finally listen to radio while I run … wait… I hate the radio… but I’ll tell you what I do like, not having to buy a silly, expensive FM transmitter to forget every time I go in my friends car. Yep, it’s true. Canon has crammed the $1500 50D’s sensor and 5D-Mark-II-like 1080p video capture into an $899 entry-level Rebel. Gizmodo ran it through its paces for a few hours, but here is a brief summary.

Canon is using nearly the exact sensor from the 50D—a 15.1 megapixel CMOS with sensitivities up to ISO 12,800 at its top-end H2 boost setting, and nearly the same HD video capture from the 5D Mark II (1080p video is captured at 20fps, while the 5D Mark II’s shoots at 30fps). Gizmodo says the 720p video at 30fps looks great and is nearly identical to the 5D Mark II, and believe it or not, the video capture mode have actually been improved compared to the 5D Mark II.

As the specs go, it’s almost a pure hybrid of the 50D and 5D Mark II, two cameras that are definitely more pro than pro-sumer, and positioned at the top of the Rebel line (above the XS and XSi).

• H.264 video capture @ 1080p/20fps and 720p/30fps with mono sound
• ISO from 100 up to 3200, with high-speed ISO settings – H1: 6400 and H2: 12800

• The 50D’s lens peripheral illumination correction

• Saves to SD/SDHC cards (class 6 or higher recommended)
• $899 with kit lens, $799 body only, available early May

Close on the heels of rumors from the Commercial Times on Monday and Dow Jones Newswires on Tuesday, Reuters reports on a source close to touchscreen manufacturer Wintek saying that the company has received orders from Apple for 10-inch touchscreens expected to be delivered in the third quarter of 2009.

Taiwan touchscreen specialist Wintek already makes small screens for Apple iPhones, and has received orders for the larger ones that are roughly the same size as those used in mini PCs, said the source close to the Taiwan firm. He asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

He added that he did not know what the final product would be, or who would make it.

It is unclear whether this is one of the same sources quoted by the Commercial Times and/or Dow Jones Newswires, but Reuters‘ claim that the source provided the information “on Wednesday”, after the previous reports had been issued, suggests that this is either a fresh repetition of the information by a previous source or a new source entirely. Mobileread just got a bunch of official-looking Kindle 2 photos, which show it in various states being held and read, plus info that it’s being released for $359 on February 24.

From the photos, it looks definitely a LOT thinner than the first, and maybe even a bit smaller too. Unless that man has gigantic hands, the Kindle goes from the tip of his middle finger to slightly below his wrist—not too shabby.

I think it looks amazing, but man, I just can’t afford another $350+ gadget, but then again, we don’t know with 100% certainty that this is the actual price and actual release date until we hear from Amazon. If I ever pay that much for what is really just an over-glorified digital book, please feel free punch me in the balls. [via Gizmodo]

One of Gmail’s most popular add-on features, the Tasks list, has arrived on your web-enabled mobile device.

If you have an iPhone, an Android phone or any other mobile with a real web browser, just surf to http://gmail.com/tasks and you’ll see the new mobile interface.

You can check off completed tasks, add new tasks or delete old ones. You can assign notes to tasks. You can also manage multiple task lists, so you can keep work and personal tasks separate. Any changes you make in the mobile interface are synced to your Tasks list in Gmail.

Having never really been a calendar or schedule writer and it being so accessible now, I’ll just have to try even harder to not write anything down! Do you think that this integration will help you be more punctual and to get things done — or do you think that it will further chain you to you cell phone? Bloomberg’s interview with Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen reveals that Adobe is developing Flash for the iPhone, it’s been in development since June 2008, and is a customized solution just for the iPhone.

Apple has said repeatedly that regular desktop Flash is too heavy (on CPU, and thus battery life) for the iPhone, whereas Flash Lite is too lousy. Jobs has coerced Adobe to create a custom solution. From Narayan’s words of “the ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver,” the engineering effort lies more in Adobe’s engineering team than in Apple’s.

Adobe actually said, back in September ‘08, that there would be a version released “in a very short time” if Apple approved it. Obviously either Apple rejected it, or Adobe themselves decided it wasn’t quite resource-friendly enough to launch.

I’m keeping with Apple’s general update policy, I’m sure that users will be “charged a nominal fee” for the privilege of using Flash on the one of the most expensive phones in the marketplace. I love the iPhone, but come on, I want my picture texts and copy and paste too — the easier to update things should be done first in my opinion!
