Enable tethering shortcut found – iPhone 3.0 is Live!

June 18th, 2009

iPhone Tethering
iPhone 3.0 is live! so I am going to post 9to5mac.com’s tethering tutorial for you guys, or you can go and support them on their site.

You now don’t have to do any downgrading or torrenting. Seems you can just run a little command in terminal (Make sure you are on OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone and iTunes 8.2):

On a Mac:

Open terminal and paste in:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Hit enter, it’ll look like nothing happened… but it put iTunes into a testing mode that lets the rest work.

After that, the steps become a lot more simple.

1. Download this file (for AT&T) and mount the disk image (thanks Gizmodo) for other carriers, try here.

2. Option-click on “restore” in your iTunes with your iPhone attached. Browse to the opened disk image file and hit OK. It will update phone settings for a few seconds.

3. You have tethering. Now go into your iPhone/settings/general/network/Internet Tethering and turn it on.

Boom – 3 steps to tethering… [via 9to5mac.com]

Or if your on a PC:

C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

For people who are unaware of what tethering is, it’s using the iPhone’s EDGE or 3G connection and using it on a computer which the phone is either attached over USB or Bluetooth, sharing the connection so that if you have no WiFi and you don’t have a 3G card you could just plug in your iPhone and browse away.

UPDATE: For O2 UK users I am hosting the .ipcc file here (right click save as) (Thanks Ryan)

Please link to this page and not the file if you want to share. Thanks.

I am not responsible for the use of this software or if your carrier gets mad at you and charges you extra! It is for testing purposes only.

CUPERTINO, Calif., March 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today introduced the all-new iPod® shuffle, the world’s smallest music player at nearly half of the size of the previous model, and the first music player that talks to you. The revolutionary new VoiceOver feature enables iPod shuffle to speak your song titles, artists and playlist names. The third generation iPod shuffle is significantly smaller than a AA battery, holds up to 1,000 songs and is easier to use with all of the controls conveniently located on the earphone cord. With the press of a button, you can play, pause, adjust volume, switch playlists and hear the name of the song and artist. iPod shuffle features a gorgeous new aluminum design with a built-in stainless steel clip that makes it ultra-wearable.

“Imagine your music player talking to you, telling you your song titles, artists and playlist names,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPod and iPhone™ Product Marketing. “The amazingly small new iPod shuffle takes a revolutionary approach to how you listen to your music by talking to you, also making it the first iPod shuffle with playlists.”

iPod shuffle is based on Apple’s incredibly popular shuffle feature, which randomly selects songs from your music library. And now, when you can’t remember the name of a song or an artist playing, with the press of a button iPod shuffle tells you the name of the song and artist. iPod shuffle can even tell you status information, such as battery life. With the ability to hold up to 1,000 songs and the VoiceOver feature, you can now easily switch between multiple playlists on your iPod shuffle. iPod shuffle can speak 14 languages including English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

The new iPod shuffle comes in silver or black and features a sleek and ultra-wearable design with a built-in stainless steel clip. iPod shuffle is the smallest music player in the world and is incredibly easy to clip to almost anything and take with you everywhere you go. iPod shuffle features up to 10 hours of battery life.*

iPhone App Management Made Easy

February 24th, 2009

YouTube Preview Image

This concept video showing possible ways Apple could improve iTunes when it comes to managing iPhone apps has been doing the rounds on the web for the past couple of days. Although, to our knowledge, the poster is in no way affiliated with Apple, the video provides some excellent, Apple-esque solutions to the currently poor app screen in iTunes.

1. Category sorting
Arrange applications like you do music and movies in iTunes by order of size and category, maybe even Cover Flow.

2. An end to upgrade mess
When you update an application or even sync new ones, your original Home Screen layout isn’t preserved. The result is an ugly mess and time wasted dragging apps to their proper place.

3. Home Screen folders
Drag and drop applications into folders you can name. One folder for games, one for social networking apps and so on.

4. Multiple direction Home Screens
At the moment you can swipe left and right but why not up and down too? That would provide the option to reach one of four screens in one swipe. [via iphonekungfu.com]

Top 10 iPhone / iPod App Store Games, As Voted by Wired.com Readers

February 16th, 2009

With more than 4,700 games in the App Store for Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch, there are a lot of games to sort though — which are the ones you should buy and the ones you should steer clear of?

Here are Wired.com readers’ top-rated iPhone game picks:

Jellycar
10. JellyCar (Free) JellyCar
You guide your car through various courses trying to complete in the best time. The game uses ‘Jelly Physics,’ where your car bends, stretches and even breaks. It seems silly at first but after a few minutes, you’re hooked!
WordWarp
9. WordWarp ($1) Word Warp
Take six given letters and make as many words as possible in the time limit.
Cube Runner
8. Cube Runner (Free) Cube Runner
Free and highly addictive. It’s like old school Star Fox.
Tapdefense
7. Tap Defense (Free) TapDefense
Set up turrets, then let the demons attack. It’s great for playing in short bursts.
Topple
6. Topple (Free) Topple
Fun, casual stacking game from the folks that made Rolando. Bought Rolando but seem to end up playing this free game more. It’s fast and fun and makes great use of the iPhone interface.
