Pirate Bay Found Guilty – NO PARLAY

April 17th, 2009

ARRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHPeter S Kolmisoppi, one of the co-founders of Pirate Bay, tweeted sadly that, “According to leaked information from the court we lost (got the news last night). Trustworthy source as well.” The site’s 4 owners each face a year in prison and over a $3.5 million fine if the judgment comes through.

For those of you that don’t know, The Pirate Bay is a Swedish website that indexes, stores and tracks BitTorrent (.torrent) files, such a music and movies. They are charged with being accessories to copyright infringement, but Kolmisoppi says that, “nothing will happen to TPB, us personally or file sharing what so ever”, although the outcome is still uncertain in my opinion.

I’m sure that the defendants will appeal the verdict and finally buy that island they were looking for, thus starting their own country… kinda like Waterworld, but with better acting.

Host Your Own Blog Or Website For About $5 A Month

April 2nd, 2009

Seriously, $5 is less than burning your house down! ;)

Seriously, $5-a-month for a server costs a heck of a lot less than burning down your house! ;)

I had two people ask me the past week, “How do you pay for hosting for your website? It’s so expensive…” Seriously? Have these guys even shopped around? I looked around and found 10 great hosts for about $5 per month, pretty reasonable.

Pull your blog off WordPress.org or Blogger and get your own server (and I don’t mean the sketchy one to the left)–it’s not as expensive as you think! Then you can tell people to go to http://www.kittenreviews.com, instead of http://www.wordpress.org/sites/longurl/snoore/kittenreviews! What you do with your own web space is your own business! ;)

IXWebhosting and FatCow have the best deals, at about $3.95 and $5.50 respectively, for pretty much unlimited everything, including MySQL which is used by WordPress and most other blogging software.

Given the choice, I think IXWebHosting is the solid choice due to their stellar tech support record, price, and near 0% down time, but I think FatCow is just about equal and also great.

Go to www.deathcarrot.com/webhosting, or click on the tab above to see my top 10.

OnLive: The Future Of Gaming… Over The Internet To Your TV

March 27th, 2009
YouTube Preview Image

OnLive delivers the hottest games from top publishers for instant, high-performance play on TV, PC or Mac over broadband…

Claimed to be in “stealth development” for years, OnLive works by using a server farm to do all work of your current console and then send it over broadband to your house. I’m pretty sure that means that even my single player games will lag now…

When it was first announced, my initial reaction was “Wow, that’s amazing” followed immediately by “But I don’t want to give up that much control over my games.”. And I don’t. I don’t want to rely on so many X factors to access and enjoy my games. I don’t want to rely on the OnLive service functioning, as well as the internet service to deliver it. What if I wanted to travel somewhere that doesn’t have internet? I could take my console. With OnLive I’d be completely cut off.

I don’t want to not “own” the game I’m paying for. I know more and more things are going digital these days, but there’s still a lot of comfort in owning a physical copy of something you paid for. You know it’s there when you need it. I imagine it’s the same reason people purchase the Ctrl+Alt+Del collection books even though all of the comics are available for free online. Sometimes you want tangible stuff that you know can’t disappear with an internet outage or a corrupt hard drive. [Tim at Ctrl+Alt+Del]

As for me and my house, we are keeping our beloved Xbox 360 and Wii for now, but in the future, who knows!

OnLive is currently recruiting for their Beta test. Interested in helping? Me too! More to come.

Parking Violation Leads To Malware Download – What I Learned? Don’t Pay Parking Tickets

February 6th, 2009

Non-Free Parking

It seems some enterprising individual in Grand Forks, North Dakota has been placing fake parking violations on cars. If the recipient visited the URL on the flyer, they would be told to install a toolbar to view pictures of their vehicle. That piece of malicious software would then attempt to install several more. The actual vehicle pictures were from Grand Forks, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar attack happen in a much larger city.

Goodness, I didn’t know people in Grand Forks, ND even had computers, let alone the semi-evil genius needed to perpetrate such a crime. I knew that I was doing something right when I didn’t pay my parking tickets! Let’s hear it for being lazy! [via HackaDay]

Google Broke Today Because Of An Extra “/”

January 31st, 2009

Google Broke? Earlier this morning, every single one of Google’s search results came with a warning that the site “may harm your computer,” including their own properties like Gmail and Google Maps. They’ve since explained what happened:

Google works with the non-profit StopBadware.org to create a list of potentially dangerous sites, which is updated periodically. One such update happened this morning, but somebody typed in “/” by mistake. That simple keystroke expands to every single URL, which is why Google was universally borked. Google engineers fixed the problem in about half an hour, and it’s back to normal now.

When something as simple as an extra character brings the entire internet to a halt, I kinda just thought the Russians were coming — At the very least the Hackers (is that a country yet?). Next time, tell us the truth, your entire computer infrastructure has become self aware, leading inevitably to the apocalyptic Armageddon as seen in the Terminator… We Are All Doomed I Tell YOU! DOOMED! [via Gizmodo via Google]

Networked Fridges ‘Negotiate’ Electricity Use — Plan How To Kill You

January 15th, 2009

Fridge Of My NightmaresThe CSIRO has developed a way to network household and commercial fridges together in a distributed peer-to-peer fashion that lets them ‘negotiate’ with each other the best time to consume electricity. The organisation’s Intelligent Energy Research team based at Newcastle has developed a controller that can be retrofitted to any existing refrigerator.

Not quite as cool as last weeks Twittering Washing Machine, “The controller connects the fridges together using a distributed peer-to-peer system, according to Sam West, an engineer at the CSIRO. ‘It’s peer-to-peer so there’s no central point of failure and it’s very scalable,’ said West.”

The technology allows the refrigerators to coordinate their on/off cycles in order to use the least amount of energy possible between all connected devices.

In the future, all your home appliances could be linked together such as air-conditioners and dryers in order to save even more energy and money. Solar panels could also be networked to alert the other appliances that there is less power being created (the sky became more overcast), thus scaling down the power usage of connected appliances. As long as it keeps my Dogfish IPA cold, I like it! [via iTnews]

How I Got My Xbox 360 And Nearly A Plasma For Free — True Story

January 14th, 2009

xbox3604free

I was dubious of the free sites you see on the internet. There are supposedly free TV’s, free iPods… even free gas cards. You sign up, complete an offer, then refer a few of your friends. Then they send the gift right to your door. Well, here at Deathcarrot.com, we wanted to do a little investigative reporting and here are the results from my earlier post in December, 2008:

My Free Xbox 360 From Xbox 360 4 Free

I posted a few ads on Craigslist and referred some of my friends and low and behold, I am now the proud owner of a brand new Xbox 360.

Exact instructions after the jump.

Twittering Washing Machines Are All The Rage

January 2nd, 2009
YouTube Preview Image

Admit it, you’ve left your clothes in the washer for a little too long and come back finding them smelling… well… slightly mildewy. Not any more! With a washer that can Twitter, you’ll know precisely when your clothes are done. Whether or not you actually do anything with that information is your own business. Now all I need is a washer that will wash my clothes, dump the clothes into the dryer, dry them, fold them, and then put them away for me…
