Enable tethering shortcut found – iPhone 3.0 is Live!

iPhone Tethering
iPhone 3.0 is live! so I am going to post 9to5mac.com’s tethering tutorial for you guys, or you can go and support them on their site.

You now don’t have to do any downgrading or torrenting. Seems you can just run a little command in terminal (Make sure you are on OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone and iTunes 8.2):

On a Mac:

Open terminal and paste in:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Hit enter, it’ll look like nothing happened… but it put iTunes into a testing mode that lets the rest work.

After that, the steps become a lot more simple.

1. Download this file (for AT&T) and mount the disk image (thanks Gizmodo) for other carriers, try here.

2. Option-click on “restore” in your iTunes with your iPhone attached. Browse to the opened disk image file and hit OK. It will update phone settings for a few seconds.

3. You have tethering. Now go into your iPhone/settings/general/network/Internet Tethering and turn it on.

Boom – 3 steps to tethering… [via 9to5mac.com]

Or if your on a PC:

C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

For people who are unaware of what tethering is, it’s using the iPhone’s EDGE or 3G connection and using it on a computer which the phone is either attached over USB or Bluetooth, sharing the connection so that if you have no WiFi and you don’t have a 3G card you could just plug in your iPhone and browse away.

UPDATE: For O2 UK users I am hosting the .ipcc file here (right click save as) (Thanks Ryan)

Please link to this page and not the file if you want to share. Thanks.

$500 PC Runs Crysis 40 FPS

April 23rd, 2009

crysis068So, you want to play Crysis as bad as I do, but your PC barely has enough power to run MSPaint, let alone the sickest, power hungry FPS out there? Well, MaximumPC has put together a sweet gaming rig for under $500 including a case this time… versus the cardboard box they used last time.

The build includes a PowerColor AX4870 512MB Videocard ($175) and a Intel Pentium E5200 2.5GHz Wolfdale CPU ($71), both great choices in terms of power, but I think there are a few more video cards around the same price that you could substitute.

The Parts:
Videocard: PowerColor AX4870 512MB
CPU: Intel Pentium E5200 2.5GHz Wolfdale
Motherboard: MSI P43 Neo3-F LGA 775
Memory: Crucial 2GB DDR2 SDRAM 800
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-S223F 22X DVDR
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200AAJS 320GB
Case and Power Supply: Rosewill TU-155 II 500 Black

I couldn’t find every, single part, but I found most at TigerDirect. If you are willing to spend a little more, for $89 more you can get a EVGA 790i Ultra SLI Barebone Kit – Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 OEM, 4GB OCZ Fatal1ty DDR3-1333, 1TB SATA2, Clear Side ATX Case, 550 Watts at just $589. Bring on the Crysis! [via Gizmodo via MaximumPC]

Pirate Bay Found Guilty – NO PARLAY

April 17th, 2009

ARRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHPeter S Kolmisoppi, one of the co-founders of Pirate Bay, tweeted sadly that, “According to leaked information from the court we lost (got the news last night). Trustworthy source as well.” The site’s 4 owners each face a year in prison and over a $3.5 million fine if the judgment comes through.

For those of you that don’t know, The Pirate Bay is a Swedish website that indexes, stores and tracks BitTorrent (.torrent) files, such a music and movies. They are charged with being accessories to copyright infringement, but Kolmisoppi says that, “nothing will happen to TPB, us personally or file sharing what so ever”, although the outcome is still uncertain in my opinion.

I’m sure that the defendants will appeal the verdict and finally buy that island they were looking for, thus starting their own country… kinda like Waterworld, but with better acting.

My Other Hoverboard Is A Scarpar Powerboard

April 9th, 2009
YouTube Preview Image

Watch the Scarpar Powerboard take on sand, snow…even go off-road (watch around 1:34 where is climbs over a huge log! CRAZY!), this cross between a snowmobile and a skateboard gets a major thumbs up from me! I have been a Mountain boarder for years and it sure beats walking back up the hill after every run! On The flip side, I have serious doubts that this thing could actually move with me on top of it… like the time I tried to steal my little cousin’s Power Wheels Jeep and it wouldn’t move at all… Anyway, the Powerboard is still in development and no release date is set yet. I want it bad! [Scarpar via Engadget via Gizmodo]

Xbox 360 Brings Someone Back From The Dead

April 6th, 2009

I forgot to post this the other day… it’s weird, creepy, and Japanese–a perfect morning treat. Apparently the Xbox 360 can “bring people back from the dead” because of its immense power… wow… who knew… and yes, that was really made by Mircosoft.

Rumor: New iPhone To Have N Wireless And FM Transmitter/Receiver?

April 6th, 2009

iPhone 3,1
The guys over at AppleInsider have discovered that the boot script in the beta 3.0 version of the iPhone firmware alludes to the Broadcom BCM4329 wireless chip.

This new Broadcom chip, among other things, supports 8011.N wireless (including 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz) and the real shocker, FM receiving and transmitting, which 9to5Mac found out from the Broadcom spec sheet. 9to5Mac says, “[this chip] theoretically could be used to broadcast sound into car stereos..without external adapters.”

MobileDevDesign points out:

The BCM4329’s FM transmit capabilities enable consumers to stream music directly from their mobile devices to car stereos or home theater systems without special adapters or bulky cables. With the FM receiver, users can get real-time traffic information as well as music, news, and sports broadcasts on their mobile devices.

While FM radio frequency isn’t the newest technology, it does open up some interesting doors. For instance, the Nike+ in-shoe pedometer might finally work for the iPhone and I can finally listen to radio while I run … wait… I hate the radio… but I’ll tell you what I do like, not having to buy a silly, expensive FM transmitter to forget every time I go in my friends car. Now that’s progress! [via 9to5Mac]

Host Your Own Blog Or Website For About $5 A Month

April 2nd, 2009

Seriously, $5 is less than burning your house down! ;)

Seriously, $5-a-month for a server costs a heck of a lot less than burning down your house! ;)

I had two people ask me the past week, “How do you pay for hosting for your website? It’s so expensive…” Seriously? Have these guys even shopped around? I looked around and found 10 great hosts for about $5 per month, pretty reasonable.

Pull your blog off Wordpress.org or Blogger and get your own server (and I don’t mean the sketchy one to the left)–it’s not as expensive as you think! Then you can tell people to go to http://www.kittenreviews.com, instead of http://www.wordpress.org/sites/longurl/snoore/kittenreviews! What you do with your own web space is your own business! ;)

IXWebhosting and FatCow have the best deals, at about $3.95 and $5.50 respectively, for pretty much unlimited everything, including MySQL which is used by Wordpress and most other blogging software.

Given the choice, I think IXWebHosting is the solid choice due to their stellar tech support record, price, and near 0% down time, but I think FatCow is just about equal and also great.

Go to www.deathcarrot.com/webhosting, or click on the tab above to see my top 10.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i: 50D’s Sensor, 1080p Vids, $899 (SO HOT!)

March 25th, 2009

Canon EOS Rebel T1i

Yep, it’s true. Canon has crammed the $1500 50D’s sensor and 5D-Mark-II-like 1080p video capture into an $899 entry-level Rebel. Gizmodo ran it through its paces for a few hours, but here is a brief summary.

Canon is using nearly the exact sensor from the 50D—a 15.1 megapixel CMOS with sensitivities up to ISO 12,800 at its top-end H2 boost setting, and nearly the same HD video capture from the 5D Mark II (1080p video is captured at 20fps, while the 5D Mark II’s shoots at 30fps). Gizmodo says the 720p video at 30fps looks great and is nearly identical to the 5D Mark II, and believe it or not, the video capture mode have actually been improved compared to the 5D Mark II.

As the specs go, it’s almost a pure hybrid of the 50D and 5D Mark II, two cameras that are definitely more pro than pro-sumer, and positioned at the top of the Rebel line (above the XS and XSi).

Some Specs (read ‘em and drool):

• H.264 video capture @ 1080p/20fps and 720p/30fps with mono sound
• ISO from 100 up to 3200, with high-speed ISO settings – H1: 6400 and H2: 12800
• DIGIC 4 processor
• Nine-point autofocusing
• 3.4fps burst shooting for 170 JPEGs or 9 RAW files
• The 50D’s lens peripheral illumination correction
• Three-inch, 920,000-dot LCD (same as the 5D Mark II’s)
• Built-in sensor dust removal system
• Live view
• Canon’s “Creative Auto” mode for light exposure tweaks on full-auto
• Saves to SD/SDHC cards (class 6 or higher recommended)
• $899 with kit lens, $799 body only, available early May

Canon Rebel T1i:
$899 MSRP with kit EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens
$799 MSRP body only
<--- Amazon
Nikon D90: $1,149 (street) with kit lens, $889 (street) body only
Canon 50D: $1,389 (street) with kit lens, $1,199 (street) body only
