X-Men Origins: Wolverine – FANtastic!

April 28th, 2009

X-Men Origins: Wolverine X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the newest movie in a long line of planned X-Men comic book to movie adaptations, or as we call them in the industry… “geek cash cows”. Without ruining the story, the movie follows Wolverine from boyhood till just before the events from the original X-Men movie from 2000.

All of your favorites are there: Wolverine, The Blob, Sabertooth, and my personal favorite, Gambit… even an appearance by Charlie from the TV series LOST, or the Lord of the Rings movies, if you really want to get nerdy about it.

The graphics are great, the soundtrack is pumping, and you get to see Wolverine… you know… tear a lot of things to shreds, because hey, that’s what you really want to see anyway… oh, and him riding a motorcycle, chewing on a cigar! The movie has some great moments, not to mention some serious “chops”… sorry, couldn’t resist! The movie stays close to the comic books without many gaping holes, and for the most part, they got it all right. I really loved it.

Bottom line: Go see it. It’s a great action flick that’s easy to follow, even if you aren’t a fan of the series. It’s rated PG-13 or 12A in the UK, there isn’t any gore really to speak of and a very small amount of blood. If you’re looking for a great action date movie, this is a great start to the Summer movie season! Bring on X-Men Origins: Mystique! W00T!

Pirate Bay Found Guilty – NO PARLAY

April 17th, 2009

ARRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHPeter S Kolmisoppi, one of the co-founders of Pirate Bay, tweeted sadly that, “According to leaked information from the court we lost (got the news last night). Trustworthy source as well.” The site’s 4 owners each face a year in prison and over a $3.5 million fine if the judgment comes through.

For those of you that don’t know, The Pirate Bay is a Swedish website that indexes, stores and tracks BitTorrent (.torrent) files, such a music and movies. They are charged with being accessories to copyright infringement, but Kolmisoppi says that, “nothing will happen to TPB, us personally or file sharing what so ever”, although the outcome is still uncertain in my opinion.

I’m sure that the defendants will appeal the verdict and finally buy that island they were looking for, thus starting their own country… kinda like Waterworld, but with better acting.

Obama And Kumar Go To White Castle… Err… House

April 8th, 2009

Obama and KumarHollywood actor Kal Penn has taken a job in the administration of President Barack Obama. That’s right, Obama and Kumar are going to White Castle House!

Kal Penn, who appeared in TV show House and is best known for his role as a pot-smoking student in the Harold and Kumar movies (Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle and Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay), will work in the Office of Public Liaison connecting the President with Asian, Pacific Island communities and arts groups. Sources also say he will also be part of the Whitehouse Hemp Advocate Committee, but that is currently unsubstantiated…

The Watchmen Movie: Reviewed (read as: Too Much Blue Penis)

March 6th, 2009

The Watchmen Movie (2009)
Just got back from watching The Watchmen on opening night, a midnight release… yea, I know I am a geek and you love me for it. ;) Directed by Zack Snyder (300 and Dawn of the Dead), and hailed as one of the most anticipated comic book… excuse me… graphic-novel-to-movie crossovers this year, The Watchmen is a gritty, dark, and violent alternate 1985 where masked heroes are either retired or outlawed and the world is perched on the brink of Global Thermonuclear War (thanks Wargames). Even if you haven’t read the novels, you’ll get a sense that this story is way bigger than the movie and can still enjoy all the twists and turns in the plot. A few things worth noting…

First off, sweet lord of mercy, the amount of blue CGI penis is staggering, I mean seriously… it’s like “The Smurfs go to Penis Island”. There is one scene, and I kid you not, where there are no less than 4 (maybe… 5 I got kinda scared that I was counting) blue CGI penii (sp?) on screen at one time. I think Snyder had to try pretty hard to cram that much blue wing-wang on the screen… sweet goodness, I don’t want to see that! Also, there is slightly uncomfortable sex scene that goes on a little too long.

Two. The action sequences are brilliant and gorgeous, that’s right, that camera work you loved from 300 and Dawn of the Dead are there in all their bloody, slow motion beauty. The blood, the shattered glass, the occasional severed arm, and the vehicles are rendered perfectly and you almost forget that humans can’t jump 20 feet onto pavement and not go splat — you totally believe what you are being shown, yet it strangely reminds me of the 60’s TV Batman… it is a weird dichotomy.

The violence, is strong and frequent, so this isn’t exactly a date movie, but then again what you do is up to you ;) My wife said that she she liked it and enjoyed the story, but she didn’t like SAW, so slot it in-between Wanted and SAW in terms of graphic blood and violence.

All in all, I say go see it, if you liked 300 you’ll most likely enjoy it, if anything, it is surely an epic film and it makes me want to go dust off my old Watchmen novels and read through them all over again — as with any good adapted book or a comic, they should point you back to the original material, and The Watchmen does just that and leaves you wanting more.
