Enable tethering shortcut found – iPhone 3.0 is Live!

June 18th, 2009

iPhone Tethering
iPhone 3.0 is live! so I am going to post 9to5mac.com’s tethering tutorial for you guys, or you can go and support them on their site.

You now don’t have to do any downgrading or torrenting. Seems you can just run a little command in terminal (Make sure you are on OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone and iTunes 8.2):

On a Mac:

Open terminal and paste in:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Hit enter, it’ll look like nothing happened… but it put iTunes into a testing mode that lets the rest work.

After that, the steps become a lot more simple.

1. Download this file (for AT&T) and mount the disk image (thanks Gizmodo) for other carriers, try here.

2. Option-click on “restore” in your iTunes with your iPhone attached. Browse to the opened disk image file and hit OK. It will update phone settings for a few seconds.

3. You have tethering. Now go into your iPhone/settings/general/network/Internet Tethering and turn it on.

Boom – 3 steps to tethering… [via 9to5mac.com]

Or if your on a PC:

C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

For people who are unaware of what tethering is, it’s using the iPhone’s EDGE or 3G connection and using it on a computer which the phone is either attached over USB or Bluetooth, sharing the connection so that if you have no WiFi and you don’t have a 3G card you could just plug in your iPhone and browse away.

UPDATE: For O2 UK users I am hosting the .ipcc file here (right click save as) (Thanks Ryan)

Please link to this page and not the file if you want to share. Thanks.

I am not responsible for the use of this software or if your carrier gets mad at you and charges you extra! It is for testing purposes only.

Rumor: New iPhone To Have N Wireless And FM Transmitter/Receiver?

April 6th, 2009

iPhone 3,1
The guys over at AppleInsider have discovered that the boot script in the beta 3.0 version of the iPhone firmware alludes to the Broadcom BCM4329 wireless chip.

This new Broadcom chip, among other things, supports 8011.N wireless (including 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz) and the real shocker, FM receiving and transmitting, which 9to5Mac found out from the Broadcom spec sheet. 9to5Mac says, “[this chip] theoretically could be used to broadcast sound into car stereos..without external adapters.”

MobileDevDesign points out:

The BCM4329’s FM transmit capabilities enable consumers to stream music directly from their mobile devices to car stereos or home theater systems without special adapters or bulky cables. With the FM receiver, users can get real-time traffic information as well as music, news, and sports broadcasts on their mobile devices.

While FM radio frequency isn’t the newest technology, it does open up some interesting doors. For instance, the Nike+ in-shoe pedometer might finally work for the iPhone and I can finally listen to radio while I run … wait… I hate the radio… but I’ll tell you what I do like, not having to buy a silly, expensive FM transmitter to forget every time I go in my friends car. Now that’s progress! [via 9to5Mac]

Host Your Own Blog Or Website For About $5 A Month

April 2nd, 2009

Seriously, $5 is less than burning your house down! ;)

Seriously, $5-a-month for a server costs a heck of a lot less than burning down your house! ;)

I had two people ask me the past week, “How do you pay for hosting for your website? It’s so expensive…” Seriously? Have these guys even shopped around? I looked around and found 10 great hosts for about $5 per month, pretty reasonable.

Pull your blog off Wordpress.org or Blogger and get your own server (and I don’t mean the sketchy one to the left)–it’s not as expensive as you think! Then you can tell people to go to http://www.kittenreviews.com, instead of http://www.wordpress.org/sites/longurl/snoore/kittenreviews! What you do with your own web space is your own business! ;)

IXWebhosting and FatCow have the best deals, at about $3.95 and $5.50 respectively, for pretty much unlimited everything, including MySQL which is used by Wordpress and most other blogging software.

Given the choice, I think IXWebHosting is the solid choice due to their stellar tech support record, price, and near 0% down time, but I think FatCow is just about equal and also great.

Go to www.deathcarrot.com/webhosting, or click on the tab above to see my top 10.

Skype Disappointing iPhone Tuesday, CrackBerry in May

March 30th, 2009

skypeiphone

Skype’s official iPhone client is in the App Store tomorrow, but with a feature list like this… should I really be that excited? At least BlackBerry users will have to wait until May to be disappointed.

The Skype app will include free Skype-to-Skype calls, SkypeOut support, a new interface, and instant messaging. The only feature that is kinda exciting is the support for 2G iPod Touches with external mics.

The real let down isn’t necessarily the Skype app, I suppose, but the App Store ban on voice over IP over 3G. Skype has to be used over a wireless network… =( Also, Gizmodo points out that, “You can’t even top up your SkypeOut account or purchase other services like voicemail, which, by the way, can’t be accessed from the app.”

I don’t wish Skype any ill-will, I’d just much rather them wait till Apple lifts the “Voice-out-IP-over-3G” ban and come out with an all singning, all dancing app that really shows off what a great service Skype is, rather than a half-baked app that is redundant with other third party apps. For instance, Fring has been doing all the things the NEW Skype app does and multiprotocol (including AIM) IMing for over a year. It’s about time two things happen:

1) Apple needs to hurry out their 3.0 firmware (which includes some apps being able to run in the background, maybe lifting the VOIP/SIP over 3G ban)

2) Skype needs to take a hint from Gizmo Project. I have their app on my Nokia N73. Basically, when you make a call, they call you and connect your call. VOILA! Problem solved. VOIP anywhere.

Skype told CNET that their app will have better voice quality (and probably lower latency), but aside from that was unable to offer many significant advantages over other apps. In my opinion, Skype should have just bought FRING and rebranded it. [via Gizmodo via CNET and NYT —Images from CNET]

Giveaway: Griffin AirCurve iPhone Acoustic Amplifier

March 9th, 2009

The awesome guys over at ThinkGeek.com sent me some gadgets to support my Stolen iPhone Cause and I’m giving them all away to you guys for being so awesome! =D.

Griffin Aircurve iPhone Amplifier

Up for grabs this week is a super cool Griffin AirCurve iPhone Acoustic Amplifier:

The AirCurve looks like a simple, elegantly minimal stand for your iPhone. But inside is a coiled waveguide “horn” that collects the sound from the built-in speaker of your iPhone, amplifies it (by about 10 decibels), and projects it into the room. While the AirCurve won’t power your iPhone, but the built-in pass-through slot can feed a dock cable through the bottom and charge from your computer.

     * Acoustically amplifies your iPhone
     * Custom-engineered waveguide requires no power
     * Allows syncing/charging using Griffin Dock Cable or
the charge/sync cable that came with your iPhone
     * Works with original iPhone or iPhone 3G
     * No batteries required

Giveaway: FREE Pogo iPhone Stylus (ended)

March 7th, 2009

The awesome guys over at ThinkGeek.com sent me some goodies to support my Stolen iPhone Cause and I’m gonna give them away to all you guys for being so awesome and because I love having strange contests.

Pogo iPhone Stylus

Up for grabs first is a super cool Pogo iPhone Stylus:

Since the iPhone’s (and iPod touch) glassy, touch sensitive screen is only sensitive to skin… a normal stylus don’t work. This is because it uses a technology called capacitive touch which measures the flow of electrons through your skin. The Pogo iPhone Stylus has magically solved this problem by tricking the iPhone into thinking it’s really a finger. How do they do it? Frankly I’m not sure

     * Specially designed stylus works with iPhone and iPod Touch
     * Enables precision selection of on-screen items (think games)
     * Included clip keeps the Pogo Stylus handy
     * Soft tip material keeps your screen clean while you tap

$14.95 over at ThinkGeek.com

Tethering Your iPhone To Your Laptop – Easier Than You Think

February 27th, 2009

iphone-tether-headAs I type this, I am going 70 MPH down I-85 in South Carolina… mind you, I am a passenger, but still it is quite a rush. How is this possible you might ask? Well, without too much “technobabble”, it is called “tethering” and it’s simpler than you might think!

Before you start, make sure you back up everything on your iPhone in iTunes, also, while the chances of this messing up anything permanently are pretty low, remember, I’m not responsible if you mess up your phone. READ EVERYTHING TWICE!

     1. Head over to the Dev-Team Blog and download the latest version of PwnageTool, I downloaded 2.2.5 for my Mac. Make sure you are updated to iPhone version 2.2.1 via iTunes before you try to jailbreak. Once you have it downloaded, fire it up and choose which iPhone version you have 2G or 3G (or iPod Touch if you want to jailbreak it) and follow the steps, it is pretty straight forward. You will be asked to power your iPhone off and hold certain buttons, once that is finished, you are ready to restore in iTunes.

     2. iTunes should recognize your iPhone in recovery mode and offer to let you restore the firmware. What you need to do on a Mac is hold down the ALT/Option key then when you click the restore firmware button, you’ll get to select the file that was created by PwnageTool, it should be on your desktop. Mine was called: iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Custom_Restore.ipsw, yours may be different.

     3. iTunes will then offer to restore your iPhone with the back up you made earlier and copy all your apps, songs, and movies back onto your iPhone. Go take a little break, this sometimes takes a while.

Create a network

     4. Once your phone is done syncing, look through your apps on your iPhone and you will see Cydia. Open it. Click Developer (no filtering), and then search for PDANet, click on it and the then click install on the top right. Once installed, move back over to your computer, click on wireless network settings and then create network. Name it whatever you want. I named mine iPhone.

     5. Go back you your iPhone go into settings and join the network you created on your laptop and then open PDANet and you should be online at blazing 3G speeds! ;)

Comment below, I’d like to hear your thoughts and if this was helpful, consider buying me a coffee :)

Just a friendly reminder: Tethering is against AT&T terms of service, but I’ve never had any problems. Stick to internet browsing, data is data… still… no torrents or hulu just to be safe ;)

iPhone App Management Made Easy

February 24th, 2009

YouTube Preview Image

This concept video showing possible ways Apple could improve iTunes when it comes to managing iPhone apps has been doing the rounds on the web for the past couple of days. Although, to our knowledge, the poster is in no way affiliated with Apple, the video provides some excellent, Apple-esque solutions to the currently poor app screen in iTunes.

1. Category sorting
Arrange applications like you do music and movies in iTunes by order of size and category, maybe even Cover Flow.

2. An end to upgrade mess
When you update an application or even sync new ones, your original Home Screen layout isn’t preserved. The result is an ugly mess and time wasted dragging apps to their proper place.

3. Home Screen folders
Drag and drop applications into folders you can name. One folder for games, one for social networking apps and so on.

4. Multiple direction Home Screens
At the moment you can swipe left and right but why not up and down too? That would provide the option to reach one of four screens in one swipe. [via iphonekungfu.com]

Last but not least, the guys over at Cheese Blocks Effects sent me a guitar effects pedal, and I gotta be honest, it is the best sounding Tubescreamer I have ever heard. Check them out at www.cheeseblockseffects.com, they do tons of custom work and mods.

On Feb. 4th, some jerks broke into my jeep right outside my house and stole my iPhone, made a few calls, and then, I assume, removed the SIM card — It’s probably on Craigslist, Ebay, or in a pawn shop as you read this! Now, I haven’t had a normal job since October and Deathcarrot.com has pretty much been my only job since then. If you can spare any change or even a few dollars so that I can replace my stolen iPhone, it would be greatly appreciated.
