Enable tethering shortcut found – iPhone 3.0 is Live!

June 18th, 2009

iPhone Tethering
iPhone 3.0 is live! so I am going to post 9to5mac.com’s tethering tutorial for you guys, or you can go and support them on their site.

You now don’t have to do any downgrading or torrenting. Seems you can just run a little command in terminal (Make sure you are on OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone and iTunes 8.2):

On a Mac:

Open terminal and paste in:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Hit enter, it’ll look like nothing happened… but it put iTunes into a testing mode that lets the rest work.

After that, the steps become a lot more simple.

1. Download this file (for AT&T) and mount the disk image (thanks Gizmodo) for other carriers, try here.

2. Option-click on “restore” in your iTunes with your iPhone attached. Browse to the opened disk image file and hit OK. It will update phone settings for a few seconds.

3. You have tethering. Now go into your iPhone/settings/general/network/Internet Tethering and turn it on.

Boom – 3 steps to tethering… [via 9to5mac.com]

Or if your on a PC:

C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

For people who are unaware of what tethering is, it’s using the iPhone’s EDGE or 3G connection and using it on a computer which the phone is either attached over USB or Bluetooth, sharing the connection so that if you have no WiFi and you don’t have a 3G card you could just plug in your iPhone and browse away.

UPDATE: For O2 UK users I am hosting the .ipcc file here (right click save as) (Thanks Ryan)

Please link to this page and not the file if you want to share. Thanks.

I am not responsible for the use of this software or if your carrier gets mad at you and charges you extra! It is for testing purposes only.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i: 50D’s Sensor, 1080p Vids, $899 (SO HOT!)

March 25th, 2009

Canon EOS Rebel T1i

Yep, it’s true. Canon has crammed the $1500 50D’s sensor and 5D-Mark-II-like 1080p video capture into an $899 entry-level Rebel. Gizmodo ran it through its paces for a few hours, but here is a brief summary.

Canon is using nearly the exact sensor from the 50D—a 15.1 megapixel CMOS with sensitivities up to ISO 12,800 at its top-end H2 boost setting, and nearly the same HD video capture from the 5D Mark II (1080p video is captured at 20fps, while the 5D Mark II’s shoots at 30fps). Gizmodo says the 720p video at 30fps looks great and is nearly identical to the 5D Mark II, and believe it or not, the video capture mode have actually been improved compared to the 5D Mark II.

As the specs go, it’s almost a pure hybrid of the 50D and 5D Mark II, two cameras that are definitely more pro than pro-sumer, and positioned at the top of the Rebel line (above the XS and XSi).

Some Specs (read ‘em and drool):

• H.264 video capture @ 1080p/20fps and 720p/30fps with mono sound
• ISO from 100 up to 3200, with high-speed ISO settings – H1: 6400 and H2: 12800
• DIGIC 4 processor
• Nine-point autofocusing
• 3.4fps burst shooting for 170 JPEGs or 9 RAW files
• The 50D’s lens peripheral illumination correction
• Three-inch, 920,000-dot LCD (same as the 5D Mark II’s)
• Built-in sensor dust removal system
• Live view
• Canon’s “Creative Auto” mode for light exposure tweaks on full-auto
• Saves to SD/SDHC cards (class 6 or higher recommended)
• $899 with kit lens, $799 body only, available early May

Canon Rebel T1i:
$899 MSRP with kit EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens
$799 MSRP body only
<--- Amazon
Nikon D90: $1,149 (street) with kit lens, $889 (street) body only
Canon 50D: $1,389 (street) with kit lens, $1,199 (street) body only

The revolutionary new VoiceOver feature enables iPod shuffle to speak your song titles, artists and playlist names. The third generation iPod shuffle is significantly smaller than a AA battery, holds up to 1,000 songs and is easier to use with all of the controls conveniently located on the earphone cord. With the press of a button, you can play, pause, adjust volume, switch playlists and hear the name of the song and artist. iPod shuffle features a gorgeous new aluminum design with a built-in stainless steel clip that makes it ultra-wearable.

“Imagine your music player talking to you, telling you your song titles, artists and playlist names,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPod and iPhone™ Product Marketing. “The amazingly small new iPod shuffle takes a revolutionary approach to how you listen to your music by talking to you, also making it the first iPod shuffle with playlists.”

iPod shuffle is based on Apple’s incredibly popular shuffle feature, which randomly selects songs from your music library. And now, when you can’t remember the name of a song or an artist playing, with the press of a button iPod shuffle tells you the name of the song and artist. iPod shuffle can even tell you status information, such as battery life. With the ability to hold up to 1,000 songs and the VoiceOver feature, you can now easily switch between multiple playlists on your iPod shuffle. iPod shuffle can speak 14 languages including English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

Giveaway: Griffin AirCurve iPhone Acoustic Amplifier

March 9th, 2009

The awesome guys over at ThinkGeek.com sent me some gadgets to support my Stolen iPhone Cause and I’m giving them all away to you guys for being so awesome! =D.

Griffin Aircurve iPhone Amplifier

Up for grabs this week is a super cool Griffin AirCurve iPhone Acoustic Amplifier:

The AirCurve looks like a simple, elegantly minimal stand for your iPhone. But inside is a coiled waveguide “horn” that collects the sound from the built-in speaker of your iPhone, amplifies it (by about 10 decibels), and projects it into the room. While the AirCurve won’t power your iPhone, but the built-in pass-through slot can feed a dock cable through the bottom and charge from your computer.

     * Acoustically amplifies your iPhone
     * Custom-engineered waveguide requires no power
     * Allows syncing/charging using Griffin Dock Cable or
the charge/sync cable that came with your iPhone
     * Works with original iPhone or iPhone 3G
     * No batteries required

Giveaway: FREE Pogo iPhone Stylus (ended)

March 7th, 2009

The awesome guys over at ThinkGeek.com sent me some goodies to support my Stolen iPhone Cause and I’m gonna give them away to all you guys for being so awesome and because I love having strange contests.

Pogo iPhone Stylus

Up for grabs first is a super cool Pogo iPhone Stylus:

Since the iPhone’s (and iPod touch) glassy, touch sensitive screen is only sensitive to skin… a normal stylus don’t work. This is because it uses a technology called capacitive touch which measures the flow of electrons through your skin. The Pogo iPhone Stylus has magically solved this problem by tricking the iPhone into thinking it’s really a finger. How do they do it? Frankly I’m not sure

     * Specially designed stylus works with iPhone and iPod Touch
     * Enables precision selection of on-screen items (think games)
     * Included clip keeps the Pogo Stylus handy
     * Soft tip material keeps your screen clean while you tap

$14.95 over at ThinkGeek.com

February 21st, 2009

< ?php if( is_single() ) { ?>

As of Feb 17th, 2009, only 9 days after posting, the www.deathcarrot.com and Twitter community donated enough money for me to get a new iPhone — this really is the iPhone that Twitter bought! Last but not least, the guys over at Cheese Blocks Effects sent me a guitar effects pedal, and I gotta be honest, it is the best sounding Tubescreamer I have ever heard. Check them out at www.cheeseblockseffects.com, they do tons of custom work and mods.

On Feb. 4th, some jerks broke into my jeep right outside my house and stole my iPhone, made a few calls, and then, I assume, removed the SIM card — It’s probably on Craigslist, Ebay, or in a pawn shop as you read this! Now, I haven’t had a normal job since October and Deathcarrot.com has pretty much been my only job since then. If you can spare any change or even a few dollars so that I can replace my stolen iPhone, it would be greatly appreciated.

Kindle 2 Official Images and Price Leak: $359 on February 24

February 8th, 2009

Kindle 2Kindle 2

Mobileread just got a bunch of official-looking Kindle 2 photos, which show it in various states being held and read, plus info that it’s being released for $359 on February 24.

From the photos, it looks definitely a LOT thinner than the first, and maybe even a bit smaller too. Unless that man has gigantic hands, the Kindle goes from the tip of his middle finger to slightly below his wrist—not too shabby.

I think it looks amazing, but man, I just can’t afford another $350+ gadget, but then again, we don’t know with 100% certainty that this is the actual price and actual release date until we hear from Amazon. If I ever pay that much for what is really just an over-glorified digital book, please feel free punch me in the balls. [via Gizmodo]

Flash For iPhone IS Coming

February 1st, 2009

iPhone FlashingBloomberg’s interview with Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen reveals that Adobe is developing Flash for the iPhone, it’s been in development since June 2008, and is a customized solution just for the iPhone.

Apple has said repeatedly that regular desktop Flash is too heavy (on CPU, and thus battery life) for the iPhone, whereas Flash Lite is too lousy. Jobs has coerced Adobe to create a custom solution. From Narayan’s words of “the ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver,” the engineering effort lies more in Adobe’s engineering team than in Apple’s.

Adobe actually said, back in September ‘08, that there would be a version released “in a very short time” if Apple approved it. Obviously either Apple rejected it, or Adobe themselves decided it wasn’t quite resource-friendly enough to launch.

I’m keeping with Apple’s general update policy, I’m sure that users will be “charged a nominal fee” for the privilege of using Flash on the one of the most expensive phones in the marketplace. I love the iPhone, but come on, I want my picture texts and copy and paste too — the easier to update things should be done first in my opinion! Awesome, Low-Tech Gadget Creates Liters of Fresh Water

January 31st, 2009

Watercone

Sometimes the simplest technology is the best. The Watercone, a solar-powered water purifier, is a testament to that.

The cone-shaped device turns salty or dirty water into up to 1.7 liters of fresh water in a matter of hours, according to Watercone.

Here’s how it works: You pour the bad water into a black pan, and then you screw on a cone. The black pan absorbs sunlight and heats up the water. Then, the evaporated water condensates into droplets on the cone’s inner wall, and the droplets drop into a circular trough at the inner case of the cone. After a few hours, you can unscrew the cap, tip the cone upside down and empty out the clean water into a receptacle.

The Watercone is due out this summer, and it should cost no more than $30. This will be a tremendous help for poorer, developing countries.

Really amazing stuff… although I have to admit that I am waiting for the Beercone and a CheeseburgerCone… [via Wired.com Gadget Lab via RedFerret]

Aiptek PocketCinema V10 — Man, That’s A Tiny Projector

January 14th, 2009
Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Viddler video.

The PocketCinema V10 is the bleeding-edge hand held VGA projector from Aiptek that has finally become a reality. Weighing in at a little over a pound and under $300, it is definitely one of the smallest, least expensive projectors you can buy at any size. This badass little guy has 1GB internal memory, an SD slot, and miniUSB… and can project a 42 inch screen from 5 feet! Seriously, a 42 inch screen! I think I’m gonna break down and get one for my Xbox 360 rig. Pretty sweet setup really, but where do I plug in my HDMI? ;)

It’s on SALE at Amazon right now!
