Space Travel Via Broomstick, Why Harry Potter Is So Excited
For years Scientists have tried to find cheaper, more effective ways to send payloads into space. One idea is the Space Elevator, basically a 62,000 mile cable tethered to earth, that would allow a container to be literally lifted into space — the problem has always been powering the device.
Everything from “…delivering microwave or laser power to the climber beamed from the Earth’s surface, or even from orbiting solar power collectors,” but a scientist in Europe has made a model that literally uses gravity to lift the container upwards. With brushes angled towards the ground that offer more friction the going up, and shaking the hell out of the base. I wanted to post the video, but they have some lame protection scheme, go check it out! [via BBC]
