Facebook’s War on Nipples (NSFW) (Updated)

December 31st, 2008

Breastfeeding now illegal!... on Facebook

In an effort to protect… well… everyone apparently, Facebook has arbitrarily removed pictures of woman breastfeeding from their site. Facebook’s basic stance on the matter is that if a picture or video shows the nipple or too much of said “jubblies”, then it is deemed obscene and removed form the site.

In an out lash, more than 85,000 people have joined a Facebook group called, “Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!” I’m joining the group, “Hey Facebook, bring back the Boobies!” because it is a cause that I believe in.

The Facebook furor has brought up a bizarre cultural issue. We’re all for breasts — the more cleavage the better. But the second a nipple is visible or we are reminded of nipples by the sight of a baby attached to one, all hell breaks loose.

Facebook isn’t the only censorship around. Breastfeeding is just as taboo in America now as it was when United Colors of Benetton published this ad in 1989, which received awards in Europe (France and Italy), but (to my understanding) never made it to America because of censorship.

Finally, Thomas Beatie, the (wo)man who announced that he is pregnant for the second time as of November, has numerous groups on Facebook supporting him, many with photos of him shirtless. Same female sex organs, same nipples he has when he was a woman… personally I think that Facebook needs to nipple this in the bud.
